The Sabah Museum Heritage Village is situated within the Ethnobotanical Gardens in the Sabah Museum Complex. It was officiated by His Excellency the Head of State, on 15th. July 1990 in conjunction with the Sabah Museum 25th. anniversary celebration. Prior to 1st. January 1995, the Sabah Museum Heritage Village was known as The Sabah Museum Traditional Houses. The Heritage Village displays replicas of traditional houses which are made up of 11units of houses of the local communities from various areas in Sabah, as well as a Lepa boat. The village and the gardens are integrated to reflect the inter-relationship between man and his environment. The Ethnobotanical Gardens consist of plants from which are derived sources of food as well as ritual and building materials used by the local communities. The traditional houses display the beauty of traditional architecture which incorporates various cultural aspects of the ethnic groups of Sabah that can be appreciated by all generations as well as visitors to the State. Huts which are used for daily activities or feasts as well as for ritual ceremonies are also built in the village. The houses were built by the various relevant ethnic groups themselves to ensure quality and authenticity of each of these houses. They also reflect the skills of the local people in the past in utilising existing building materials from their environment. These houses are furnished with artefacts to create a true atmosphere. Occassionally, traditional music is played to enliven the village.
